00:16:32 But it especially comes in handy if you're trying to, I don't know, humanize monsters.
00:16:40 So if you're trying to humanize monsters, ah, just show a a video which is way.

00:16:59 And the other tactic that is is heavily used is it's all about scoring.

00:17:06 What did I say when I when I said that many people are surprised to, to understand, or to to wrap their head around when they first get into filmmaking or anything like that and especially narrative.

00:32:37 What happened was one of the detectives from the vice squad came in to see me and he had a list that was at that point that we were able to learn that these were computer classes that went on literally every day of the week and Saturday.
00:32:51 And we drew a big map of the whole village of Great neck, sectioned it off, and started sending detectives out to do interviews.
00:33:00 She set us up in teams, male, female teams and.
00:33:06 We got a list of alleged victims as soon as we went into the.

00:33:14 And we explained why we're there, what we're doing there and we'd really like to talk to their children, preferably alone.

00:33:25 They wanted something done immediately, but they always want to be very careful about how you proceed because the one thing.

00:42:18 As we conducted more interviews of the children, Jesse's name start to pop up and Jesse was there. And what did Jesse do?
00:42:26 And then eventually we were able to ascertain that Jesse's role was not one of, you know, helping his dad conduct the computer class, but basically abusing the children himself.

02:05:14 Adults do that as well, so you have to be very mindful of the fact that when you're interviewing a child, if the child starts to answer questions, your response should be someone in the framework of.

02:05:26 Or what happened next or what do you remember it then as opposed to he did this to you, didn't he?

02:05:38 So this is the same game they played in the West Memphis 3 documentary, where they're like, oh, look, the cops were leading them on with no with no.

02:08:47 Look, if you plead guilty, you know, we'll give you a good deal and on, you know, two charges.

02:10:37 That he also was a victim of his father, that she might consider the plea negotiations in a more favorable way.
02:10:48 He came up with this strategy. It was Peter Panera's fictionalized story that he fed to me and said if you say this, it's going to look good for you.
02:10:59 See, it was his lawyer who's saying the exact opposite. It's his lawyer that that made-up this lie that he was guilty and said they said, look, kid, if you if you say you're guilty.

02:11:15 Jesse, when you plead guilty in open court, you're going to have to admit to this type of anal ****** 14 times and I'm not going to let you do that.

02:14:18 And as a matter of fact, on the day that the plea was taken, Jesse was dancing and singing on the courthouse steps while being videotaped by his two brothers.

02:14:51 The fact that one of the dads came at him in the in the courthouse because they were, they were acting like that outside the courthouse where they're talking about the rape of the the guys kid.

02:22:48 A story that begins when his family, his mother, and his father and the three boys a perfectly normal seeming family, are sitting around their their dinner table, ready, ready for Thanksgiving dinner sometime in the late 80s and their front door is shattered by a police battering ram which blows up the door and and the house fills with police.

02:23:14 At this point, you know he's seen it a bunch of times because it's been playing at film festivals all over the world.

02:23:19 These media events.
02:23:21 I presume the guy interviewing him has seen the movie.

02:23:27 That's not what happened in the movie.
02:23:30 That's not at all what happened the movie.
02:23:31 So alright, this is the first like he, he's explained what his movie is about and he's not even being accurate about what happened in his own movie.
02:23:39 Instantly who go on and and begin boxing up the family's possessions and photographing things and eventually end up leading the the father Arnold and his youngest son Jesse out through the maze of television news cameras.
02:23:52 That's by then assembled on their front lawn, changing their lives completely.
02:23:56 As you could imagine.
02:23:58 And that's sort of the beginning.
02:24:00 Of the story of how this family gets brought into the public eye in a way that's sort of unfathomable to most of our normal families.

02:24:12 To you vibe to it, doesn't it?
02:24:14 Oh yeah, my film details this perfectly normal family that was sitting down at at Thanksgiving dinner.
02:24:20 Like by the way, totally omits the part where the dad got busted for child **** a month or prior to that.
02:24:26 You know? Oh, we're just.
02:24:27 They were just sitting down to to Thanksgiving dinner.
02:24:29 Didn't that wasn't that wasn't the case as we just saw in his own movie.
02:24:34 The wife was at the store and the the sons weren't even there.
02:24:37 It was just him and the cops knocked and he wouldn't let him in, so they kicked the door down.
02:24:41 But Nope, Nope.
02:24:42 Swat team showed up with a battering ram, and right in the middle of Thanksgiving dinner and busted the door down and just started boxing everything up and saying that they were ******* pedophiles.

02:25:01 I think it's hard to make a film about family for three years and not have a real strong feelings toward them, particularly when you see that the media coverage of this case and of this family story is so incredibly heartless.

02:25:24 Like no, there's no possible way.

02:25:33 They didn't capture the humanity of these people.
02:25:36 What do you believe about their guilt?

02:25:40 Disturbed me a lot about the filmmaking process.
02:25:43 Here is how many people were willing to spend a great deal of time giving me detailed renditions of events that took place when they weren't present.
02:25:50 And so I sort of decided that with everyone else.
02:25:53 Going to to give you the second hand and third hand information, I would not do that in the film and so instead what I've tried to do is to give every conceivable piece of evidence that the police would have dug out.
02:26:05 Have there been a real investigation which there really wasn't here?
02:26:10 Well, we're we're going to see it here in a moment.
02:26:12 That's a giant ******* lie.
02:26:14 But notice how he doesn't answer whether or not he thinks they're guilty.
02:26:18 He's just like, oh, no, I just.
02:26:20 I think that I just think the police did a ******.
02:26:22 Job and it really troubles me.
02:26:24 It's really troubling to see that that these people got railroaded without being able to just answer yes or no.

02:26:53 And so they're taping is just another example of their craving us just, I mean I I think that David Friedman's explanation is more plausible.

02:27:01 Which is that, you know, he knew that his father was going to jail in six weeks.
02:27:05 And so, of course, he bought a video camera because he wanted his kids and his grandkids to see what his father was like, and he didn't want them to read about it.

02:27:13 He wanted them to know.
02:27:14 His father was.
02:27:17 There's that plus more.
02:27:19 And and and was a person, I think.

02:30:07 I mean, this is a story of a father whose actions combined with a lot of misfortune in terms of who he ran into along the way.

02:35:52 court of Appeals ruling saying that there was a reasonable likelihood Jesse Friedman was wrongfully convicted and shocking new evidence child witnesses now all grown up who say it never happened.

02:36:56 Five months into the investigation, Arnold Friedman pled guilty.
02:37:00 And endangering the welfare of a child, a Class A misdemeanor, 1 count in full.
02:37:04 Satisfaction of this indictment.
02:37:07 Not only that, he confided to his wife he had abused boys in the past, all of which made Jesse Friedman's position more complicated.
02:37:15 How could he be innocent if the crimes took place right in front of him?
02:37:18 The community was up in arms, captured in this chaotic moment at the courthouse.
02:37:26 Was 18 years old.
02:37:28 And I was the only person standing up and saying these things never happened.
02:37:35 My lawyer's position was basically, it doesn't really matter if you're innocent or guilty. There's no way you can win the trial. And he was right. The game was rigged. The fix was in.
02:37:48 Film director Andrew Jarecki says he couldn't get the Freedman story out of his head over the past decade as he dug deeper, he began to have more and more doubts about whether justice had been served.

02:40:06 The director who studied this case for three years and saying he got railroaded.

02:40:14 If you know he might be innocent, just like the movie and all the other interviews.
02:40:19 News and you know then then we find out that that they're they're going to find out the decision of the the the DA's office, whether or not they're going to take another look at this case.

02:40:37 This room has been implanted with an idea that never existed.

02:40:44 Elizabeth has never been to her husband's childhood home or seen this room.

02:47:42 Was taken into custody at his home yesterday, about one hour before he was due to graduate from an alternative high school in North Shore Community, police said.
02:47:51 He was charged with 14 counts of first degree ******, 2 counts of first degree sexual abuse and two counts of using a child in a sexual performance, police said.
02:48:00 The abuse allegedly occurred during ****** arranged by Arnold Friedman and his son Jesse between March 1st, 1986 and June 30th, 1986.

02:49:48 And they said approximately 5 like you're the director and you don't know the exact number of kids that you interviewed like, that's.

02:49:58 Maybe it wasn't even 5.
02:50:02 And then in in an interview, he said I don't know how many I spoke to.

02:50:27 And that the reporter in New York Times that that wrote this article when they asked the the lawyer for the other victims, they said he never tried to.

02:50:41 And that the lawyer knew of no attempt.
02:50:42 By the filmmaker to reach his clients.
02:50:49 When this was up for an Academy Award.

02:52:33 But we have worked through our suffering and therapy and we we are men now, no longer ashamed.

02:52:43 And now one of the men who have tortured and threatened us, Jesse Friedman, is being pardoned, like or paraded like a celebrity.

02:52:53 Or while we have been left in the shadows, powerless and voiceless once again.
