00:56:43 So they said that you have to go to California and forget what town it was, you know, in the San Francisco area and go to a specific post office.

00:57:25 And they they emerged out of the woods where apparently they were camping because they did a lot of camping.

We want to update you now on our top story that's been developing out of Southern California for the past several hours a an apparent mass suicide in a luxury mansion in Rancho Santa Fe, about 20 miles north of San Diego. Police say at least 39 bodies, all of them white males between the ages of 18.
02:40:56 And 24 have been found inside the 5000 square foot mansion. You're seeing videotape of what the compound looked like earlier this afternoon. It is now dark. There. There are choppers in the sky from our affiliate stations will be continuing to.
02:41:10 Bring you live updates from the scene. Now you're seeing a live picture courtesy of CNN affiliate KT LA from their chopper above the mansion. Now police are saying that these bodies were found in different rounds of the house. Apparently the men were.

02:41:27 Dark pants and tennis shoes. They were found.
02:41:30 Lying prone with their hands at their sides, and they are saying that there were no signs of trauma. However, police have yet to say what again leads them to conclude that this was a mass suicide.
02:41:46 The news coverage was all over the place, as you can imagine. This was a big deal.
02:41:51 And the country.
02:41:54 Didn't know how to handle this in in.
02:41:56 A way in a way, there was just.
02:41:58 So such a weird thing.
02:42:00 We're going to begin tonight with the strange suicide of the 39. It's very strange. The 18 men and 21 women whose bodies were found last night just north of San Diego may well have considered that now was the time to leave this world.
02:42:14 Because they had been given the ultimate gift of everlasting life, this story will stretch your imagination before we're finished. Based on what we know, this may be about people who thought it was time to shed their human containers. Because out there behind the hail bop comet, there was a UFO waiting to transport them beyond this world.
02:42:35 To the Kingdom of Heaven, we have several reports, ABC's Brian Rooney, first of all, standing by in the San Diego suburb of Rancho Santa Fe. Brian, what's the latest?
02:42:44 Peter, all of the bodies are out of the house now. It did take some time. The first officers who went in there yesterday were nearly overcome by fumes and investigators spent a good deal of night checking the House to see that it was safe to reenter.
02:42:57 As light broke over this community of mansions and swimming pools, coroners workers could be seen carrying shrouded bodies out of the house to their vans. They filled three trucks with bodies. The investigators had little to say about what they had seen, made the curious house with a lot of dead human beings there, sheriff's deputies.
02:43:16 Released a videotape of the scene inside the house, taken by their officers. It shows room after room, body after body. The coroner said the group appeared to use a combination of drugs, alcohol and plastic bags to kill themselves.

02:43:36 The head and it appears that that's really what it is.
02:43:41 The bodies were found on beds, cots and mattresses throughout the house, all on their backs with their hands.

02:43:55 Covering their face on a triangular shape down the front, there all across their chest, people familiar with the group said. They called this rented house their temple and described themselves as monks. They had computers in the house and their own Internet website called the higher source. The group apparently earned their living designing websites, including one for the San Diego Polo Club.
02:44:15 A man who knew some members of the group said he last saw them over the weekend.
02:44:19 And I said, where are you guys going? I said.
02:44:22 Well, we can't tell you where we.
02:44:24 So why not? I said, well, we're just taking off.
02:44:27 I I presume they were going.
02:44:28 Camping but sheriff's deputies were called yesterday by an unidentified former member of the group who became worried after receiving a videotape on the tape. Members of the higher source happily said they were shedding their human containers and that the Hail Bob comment.

02:44:44 They had been looking for the man, drove to the house with his new employer.
02:44:48 The employee got out and went inside, came back out 10 minutes later and informed me that it and in fact had taken place.
02:44:56 And even as the bodies were received at the coroner's office this morning, all of them had already been identified. Apparently they were carrying identification in the pockets of their tunics and the notification of families has already begun. We're told that one Southern California family has been told they've lost a family member.
