00:20:20 Mr. Tommy Yang, a black police officer for the city of Poughkeepsie, was asked by the Duchess County Sheriff's Department to question Tawana at Saint Francis Hospital as it was very clear to the Duchess County Sheriff Department that white police officers invoked fear in Tijuana upon seeing them.

00:21:20 Actually, I just. I spoke to both detectives. They informed me of what the information they had gained. Excuse me. And I went across the wall on my own to speak to her.
00:21:28 What did they indicate that she had conveyed to, to them or anyone for that matter?
00:21:34 They had no information other than her identity.
00:21:36 I see. And then you subsequently questioned her. OK. What did she say to you or?

00:21:46 I attempted to gain information on what had occurred, if she could get a description of her alleged assailants where.

00:21:55 And any information.
00:21:57 At all. So what did she say to you in response to your questions?
00:22:00 She made no verbal statements. She all my responses were getting through, nods head shrugs. Batting her eyes, she said one word to me the entire time.

00:22:16 OK, now I do know in our previous interview with you, you mentioned that she mentioned White Cop.

00:23:13 Eventually, the story that we got out of her.
00:23:16 Was that around 7:30? I'm sorry. Around 8:30.
00:23:24 Four days prior.
00:23:26 She was going home on the bus.
00:23:31 And outside this mobile gas station, she got off the bus.
00:23:37 To go home and while crossing the street.
00:23:41 A car, a green 4 door car.
00:23:44 Pulled up to her.
00:23:46 And a large white man jumped out of the car.
00:23:50 Flashed a badge.
00:23:53 And yelled at her to get in the car, bitch!
00:23:56 And when she resisted, he grabbed her and punched her in the head and threw her in the car.
00:24:05 They then drove out to the woods and for four days.
00:24:11 These 4 white guys that were in this car repeatedly raped her and sodomized her for four days in the forest.
00:24:21 They then cut her shoes.
00:24:25 And burned her hands.
00:24:28 And then wrote on her.
00:24:32 And smeared dog shirt on her.
00:24:35 And then put her in a plastic bag.
00:24:39 And dumpster in a dumpster.
00:24:43 And.
00:24:44 She went home.
00:24:46 After she was at the hospital.
00:24:49 She was very traumatized by the experience, obviously.
00:24:56 The local news.
00:24:58 Picked up on this right away, which immediately spread to Nationwide News, which is odd because I always hear that it's only when pretty white girls are victimized that the news cares but.
00:25:12 Maybe she just got lucky. She just got lucky. Maybe there was a black guy working in the in The Newsroom that day.

00:25:20 He decided to help assist out.
00:25:23 So they they start talking about in the news about how this is this is this horrific crime is is symbolic.

00:26:07 The horrors of racial brutality. Tawana Brawley, a black teenager from Wappingers Falls, NY, was found last November in a plastic garbage bag. She was smeared with dog feces covered with racial slurs. Brawley said she'd been abducted and raped by 6 white men, one supposedly a police officer.
00:26:32 So it was a big story. It was on national news on all four networks. It's all, I mean, it's it was one of the big stories.

00:26:56 The story shocked the people in this sleepy upstate town.
00:27:02 Yeah, there was a nice, quiet white town.
00:27:05 Which is exactly what you'd expect in a quiet white town. As we learned the last stream, it was very dangerous for a black man, or certainly a woman.
00:27:15 To walk around in a neighborhood that was very white, and so she was just, you know, it was a ticking time bomb waiting to go off.
00:27:24 Her putting herself in this dangerous situation all the time.
00:27:27 The Anti Defamation League of Bennett, bereft today, charged that violence against blacks and Jews has escalated in the past six years. The report said that even though there are fewer hate groups, the acts of violence included bombings, armed robberies and murder, and today Bear Peterson reports. Activists pointed as an example to the specter of hate in a small community in New York.

00:29:09 Been an increase in war and racial violence, and most of us who've dealt with the criminal justice system have never felt it's been fair to minorities of the blacks in this nation.

00:29:32 So as I said, she had to turn to the only ally she could, really.

00:29:44 By putting on demonstrations in New York City.
00:29:47 Around the same time, he put on the the days of outrage.
00:29:53 In New York City, this is, you know again in 19/19/88.
00:29:57 Demonstrators arrived an hour early at Borough Hall Park in Brooklyn for the protest. Organizers had called for everyone in New York City to join what they billed as a day of outrage, a massive exercise in civil disobedience.
00:30:08 But only some 600 people turned out. There are a number of young blacks in the March, but also many middle-aged men and women, people who remember the civil rights struggles of two decades ago.

00:30:23 Many of the rallying cries were reminiscent of that era, just as the rush hour was starting to build, the Reverend Al Sharpton led the demonstrators through the streets of Brooklyn, keeping police in a horde of media guessing before they stopped at the Brooklyn War Memorial. There, they broke into three groups, one headed toward the Brooklyn Bridge, where they stopped eastbound.

00:30:43 At the J Street Station, 200 demonstrators climbed onto the tracks. Power had to be turned off. Some commuters sympathized with the protesters, but others were obviously angered. Police say that some protesters pulled emergency cords on several trains while others held the doors open.

00:33:13 They chased him out of their neighborhood, and when he ran away he got hit by a car.
00:33:20 It wasn't he. He wasn't murdered by a gang of whites.

00:33:26 And got hit by a car and the guy hit him with the car. Wasn't like trying to run. It was just some random car hit him.
00:33:36 And that's that was the big that was the big horrific Michael Griffith case.

00:33:53 The the Brawley family turned to Al Sharpton.
00:33:57 Who immediately started saying that there was a cover up going on that the local District Attorney was was trying to hide something because of the white cop. That was that that she had claimed had raped her. So they were protecting the white cop.

But there is no legal way to try to stop this grand jury other than civil disobedience, which is why we did not announce the March. But we called out to our community.

00:40:46 This has all been an effort not to punish the mother of US possible alleged victim. This has been an effort to get information cooperate with the grand jury, find out exactly what happened to bring justice.

00:41:01 To find out if indeed there were attackers, what information we can have to go and charge those attackers. So I'm urging Glenda Brawley to take the steps to encourage this contempt that the judge has found here today.

A black teenager claimed to have been raped by a gang of white men last fall, and her lawyers used the case in an attempt to undermine the entire system of justice. Now, a grand jury has decided.

01:08:19 And the reason why she was all kind of out of it when they paramedic showed up as she was high as a.

01:08:35 She couldn't have been wearing the shoes when the cuts were made.
01:08:39 And there was evidence at at one of her friend's apartments.

01:08:53 It's not just my report, of course. It's the grand jury's report. And when you read this report, it's hard to get past one page. That's the page where jurors prove that Tawana Brawley wrote racial slurs on herself and then smeared feces over the slurs. It's at the guts of Tawana story. For months, her advisers have ridiculed anybody silly.
01:09:13 Enough to suggest the filth sound on Tawana was self-inflicted. Now the jurors who spent months listening to all the evidence, say just that and more.
01:09:23 The Brawley report is tough, detailed and blunt on the key question of whether Tawana was raped, the grand jury says no. There was no medical or forensic evidence that a sexual assault was committed on Tawana Brawley.
01:09:38 If a 15 year old girl had been forcibly raped or sodomized.
01:09:43 By multiple assailants over a four day period, there is a high probability that medical or forensic evidence would have been found.
01:09:53 What about that gang of white men, the alleged attackers? The grand jury says. No. No gang, no man. And jurors point out, Tawana Brawley never provided A detailed account of her allegations or named her alleged assailants to anyone. As for the kidnapped story, the report says.
01:10:13 No. It says the teenager actually stayed in a place she knew well. Jurors found Tawana Brawley had significant contact with her former apartment at some time during her four day disappearance.

01:11:19 Was contacted by the Sheriff's Office while Tawana Brawley was still in Saint Francis Hospital. The FBI was contacted based on the racial epithets on her body even before she indicated that a white cop quotes was involved.
01:11:35 All of the key evidence in the case was sent to the FBI laboratory in Washington, DC.
01:11:40 But as to whether there was a cover up by the Bradleys, the grand jury says yes.
01:11:45 It was alleged and indicated that Tawana Brawley.
01:11:50 Was abducted, sexually abused, raped, sodomized over a four day period by three to six men, one of whom was a police office.
